SUNDAY OBSERVER, December 24, 2000
Since about two weeks ago, radio airwaves have been enjoing a splendid play of a love chant from a Liberian singer who´s willing to give away our world for love. It's no pain. His lyrics are on the influence of deep emotional impulse. Who dares a loving heart. Hypnosis and a cut from the edge of infatuation make a loving heart do anything right or wrong, whitout regret. Michael Bolton said it clearly in his remix of "When a man loves a woman", (when a man loves a woman….. can't keep his mind on nothing else. He'd trade the world). But in Lester's love case, he isn't putting the world on sale. He is giving it out freely. "I think I'm jealous. I wish I was a girl and get the offer of this beautiful world, just because of my love. I'd drift into insanity through ecstasy."
Lester D's new single is a shopping of bits and pieces. He brought together a bunch of African styles and spiced up with Carribian's calypso and they gave a groovy reaction he calls "Roots Gbeema". If I over emphasise on this single my words could be mistaken for exaggeration. But what I heard is juicy enough for the largest bloating. The production quality, the singing, the lurical message; music cynics should take a break and listen properly, maybe, give kudos to this talented kid who knows what to sing, how and when to sing it.
"Just because of your love", is not a fairy tale but a sentimental danceable lullaby that sends a recipient heart into a drowsy world. The opening chant "Year-na-na-na-na, Shake it-shake it-party-year", signals a dance party. The sound groove still goes with a party impression till fade. But the words and the lyrics express so vividly Lester's heart. The song isn't the creeping stage of Lester D's career. He's fairly an old hand in the industry.
Born Lester Garmodyu in 1968 in Monrovia. Liberian with a persuading music instinct. He started music in the village as traditional drummer. But before then, at age 11, Lester was always enjoing his quiet time with sorrowful folk songs. "As a little child, I had a share of emotional stress, so when I have a quiet time I take my mind into sorrowful thoughts and that's when heart-melting folk songs come into my head" he recalls. "I sing the popular ones and sometimes, I impromptly compose mine and sing".
With the help of cousin George Rambo, Lester became a helper in a Monrovia based live band called "The Intruders". "I began with the band in 1984 as a helper. My cousin brought me in and my initial job in the band was putting together instruments. I grabbed some singing skills through keen observation of wonderful live performers of the band. Later, I began doing live remixes of the songs of the likes of Bob Marley, Alpha Blondy and Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Fela was my main role model. I love the song 'Shakara', and I made a great deal out of it".
In 1989 the cub became a full grown lion. Lester D busted loose with the album entitled "Children are crying". He became the rave of the moment. Lester quickly capped the reign with a sophomore eight tracker entitled "Pledge Allegiance". The 1990 realeased follow-up album had no time to excel. The Liberian was caught it and Lester saw an imminent halt to his career approaching. He fled the country for dear life, but didn't leave his zeal behind. Lester D continued performing in clups and shows through different countries he so journed.
In 1994, after the war, the surviving Liberian populace were overwhelmed with the grief of bloodshed. They needed some words of solace, and that could only come through music. Lester's "Pledge Allegiance" album now got a chance to show its worth. With consoling lyrics and a matching backing sounds, the songs gave Lester the award of "Liberian Best Artist of The Year" (1994/1995).
On the featof the album’s national progress things still didn’t go smoothly with Lester David. He embarked on another sojourn through five countries. Lester transited through Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Senegal and Mauritania before coming to The Gambia, his God-chosen abode. Lester took shield under "Sabanoh 2000" band and soon found a signifiant singing role. His distinct style attracted a lot of fans. Some turned out to be intimate friends.
As designed in heaven, Lester 'D' predestinely met his life partner while endeavouring to achieve fame in the smiling coast. Danish born Joanna Tengvad was Lesters missing rib bone. When they found each other it was like the attraction of north and south poles of two magnets. They adhered their emotions and it seems like the knife to separate them has not been manufactured yet and might never be.
Lester D's experimentation at Yellowgate Studios wasn't only a display of his lyrical and voice control skills but as well a straight-from-the-heart feeling for his dear Joanna. "Just Because of Your Love" is a transparent worded song transporting the real burning feeling of love.
It's a maxi-single of three versions. "I can't measure the quality I got from Yellowgate", Lester confesses. "The song is not an axaggeration of what I felt, but an under-expression of my true feelings for my wife. I am glad I got the quality production to back the singing. The single is a taste of what I intend serving the market in mid-2001, I'll still be working with Ellie Nachif on a sixteen track CD album. That will be my third effort" Lester says.
"Just Because of Your Love" is on a promotional journey. A few copies of it was pressed. Kerewan Sounds and VP Records are marketing it while radio DJs are having a continous sweet airplay. Lester David Garmodyu is a lion. Preparing to go on prowl. His fangs are sharp and the prey is international stardom.
EDIT/Admin d. 30. september 2017: WOW!
